Understanding the Game: Exploring the Thrilling World of Sixes Lacrosse

Sixes Lacrosse - Girls Lacrosse Sixes

The Rise of Sixes Lacrosse in the World of Lacrosse
Sixes Lacrosse has been on the rise in the world of lacrosse, with the game gaining popularity both in the United States and internationally, learn the ins and outs with us!

The fast-paced and high-scoring nature of the game makes Sixes exciting to watch and play. Sixes Lacrosse games are often played in a tournament format, with several games taking place over a weekend, making it a fun and social event for players and fans.

Another reason for the rise of Sixes Lacrosse is that it is a more accessible version of the game. With a smaller field size and fewer players,  Sixes Lacrosse can be played in smaller spaces and requires fewer players to field a team. This makes it easier for schools and community organizations to start lacrosse programs, as they may not have access to a full-sized field or enough players for a traditional lacrosse team.

In addition,  Sixes Lacrosse is a great way for players to develop their skills. All players on the field contribute on both offense and defense. It’s a format where all players essentially play all positions, expanding the player's opportunity to learn and grow. The fast-paced nature of the game also requires players to make quick decisions and think on their feet, which can improve their overall lacrosse skills.

Finally, Sixes Lacrosse has gained recognition from lacrosse organizations such as US Lacrosse and World Lacrosse, with the creation of rules and regulations for the game. This has helped to legitimize and standardize Sixes Lacrosse and make it a more widely recognized version of the sport.

Overall, the rise of Sixes Lacrosse is a reflection of the sport's growth and evolution. As more people become interested in the game, Sixes Lacrosse offers a fun, exciting, and accessible way to play and watch lacrosse. Get involved today!

6 Rule Differences Between Women's Sixes Lacrosse and Traditional Lacrosse: (Full List Of Rules)

  1. Field size: In Sixes Lacrosse, the field is smaller than in traditional lacrosse, about half the size.
  2. Number of players: Sixes Lacrosse is played with five field players and a goalie on the field, while traditional lacrosse is played with eleven field players and a goalie.
  3. Draws: In Sixes Lacrosse, there are only draws to begin each period of play. After the opening draw, the team that scores a goal takes possession of the ball.
  4. Time: Sixes Lacrosse games are shorter than traditional lacrosse games.
  5. Substitutions: In Sixes Lacrosse, substitutions are "on the fly," meaning players can sub in and out of the game without stopping play.
  6. Penalties: Penalties in Sixes Lacrosse are shorter in Sixes Lacrosse. Personal fouls result in a 30-second, non-releasable penalty. Technical fouls result in a 30-second, releasable penalty. Sixes Lacrosse features a stalling rule. Teams must advance the ball to the goal within five seconds of receiving the stall warning from the referee.

Sixes Lacrosse Potential Future in the Olympics
Sixes Lacrosse has the potential to be included in the Olympics in the future. In 2017, World Lacrosse, the international governing body for lacrosse, was granted provisional recognition by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). This recognition means that World Lacrosse is now eligible to apply for inclusion in the Olympic Games.

Sixes Lacrosse is an attractive option for Olympic inclusion because of its fast-paced and exciting style of play, which would be appealing to audiences around the world. Additionally, the smaller field size and fewer players required to field a team make it a more accessible version of the sport, which could help to increase participation in lacrosse globally.

However, there are several challenges to overcome before Sixes Lacrosse could be included in the Olympics. One of the biggest challenges is the limited number of sports that can be included in the Olympic program. The IOC has a strict limit on the number of sports and athletes that can compete in the Games, which means that lacrosse would need to compete with other sports for a spot.

Another challenge is the lack of infrastructure and support for lacrosse in some parts of the world. While the sport has gained popularity in North America and Europe, it is still relatively unknown in many countries. This could make it difficult to justify including lacrosse in the Olympics, as there may not be enough countries with established lacrosse programs to field competitive teams.

The lacrosse community is excited about the opportunity to show the world the potential of Sixes Lacrosse and its growth.

Celebrate International Women's Day With Top Threat Tournaments

March 8th is International Women's Day and Top Threat Tournaments is highlighting impactful women in lacrosse. We are so grateful for all that these college coaches, club directors, and tournament organizers do to uplift the women and girls in our community.

Dorrien Van Dyke- Johns Hopkins Women's Lacrosse Assistant Coach

How do you empower yourself and the girls/women in the lacrosse community?
Having confidence in myself and do my best to spread that energy to the young women that I coach and interact with daily

Is there a challenge you overcame on your way to the leadership role you currently have that you would like to share with others?
I think just always being an advocate for yourself and the people around you, knowing you did the work to get where you are.

What advice would you give to girls and women who want to be impactful in the girl's/women's lacrosse community?
Be grateful and love the game. This game has given me so many opportunities, friendship, and endless amounts of fun.

Krista Crittenden- Owner & Recruiting Coordinator for Florida Shine Elite

How do you empower yourself and the girls/women in the lacrosse community?
Being mindful of the bigger picture and taking every opportunity with your team or coaches to learn. Directing a club and HS team gives you so much exposure to young female athletes and their parents. It’s so important to remember why we are all doing this. Sports teach so much more than the actual skill set needed to play the game. Each failure is an opportunity to overcome adversity and become stronger. Each success motivates you to work harder. Sometimes a simple one-on-one interaction with an athlete can change their life or yours. We all do so much more than coach a sport.

What advice would you give to girls and women who want to be impactful in the girl's/women's lacrosse community?
Think my earlier rant might have answered this already. But… Remember that you are gaining so much more than a sport skill. You will learn time management, problem solving skills, hard work over complacency, interpersonal skills dealing with teammates and coaches, the pain of failure, and the delight of success, and when it all comes down to it if you’ve responded with grit and put in the hard work and made decisions for the betterment of the people around you and yourself, you can accomplish your goals.

Kateri Linville- James Madison University Assistant Women's Lacrosse Coach

How do you empower yourself and the girls/women in the lacrosse community?
Make my/our work rate match our want rate. Luck favors the prepared.

Is there a challenge you overcame on your way to the leadership role you currently have that you would like to share with others?
Leadership is a challenge and an opportunity every day. Embrace the process on the daily.

What advice would you give to girls and women who want to be impactful in the girl's/women's lacrosse community?
Sports are a metaphor for life. Recognize you have a leadership platform every day, every way. Show up with and for your people. As a team/program always play for something bigger - a mission, a cause, a person, a reason, a purpose. Lift others up. Help everyone find a voice. Share the stories!!!

Megan Clark- Owner TNLAX

How do you empower yourself and the girls/women in the lacrosse community?
Celebrate their accomplishments on and off the field

What advice would you give to girls and women who want to be impactful in the girl's/women's lacrosse community?
Take the time to get to know your players and make a positive impact on their life. I think it’s important for players to enjoy every chapter of their playing career! Each one should leave a mark on their lives!!

Jazmin Cachimbo- Fairleigh Dickenson University - Florham Assistant Women's Lacrosse Coach

How do you empower yourself and the girls/women in the lacrosse community?
What a phenomenal question. I empower myself by self positive talk. If it’s looking in the mirror and giving myself positive affirmations or if speaking out loud “you got this”. I empower my community by giving back to young children that don’t have the opportunity to play sports every day.

Is there a challenge you overcame on your way to the leadership role you currently have that you would like to share with others?
A challenge that I had to overcome was it’s okay to put yourself first even if it makes others or loved ones upset.

What advice would you give to girls and women who want to be impactful in the girl's/women's lacrosse community?
Before helping other. Help yourself. Find who you are. Understand yourself and know what makes you happy. Once you have a sense of who you are. You are able to help and impact others. Because you will be confident in what you’re preaching to others.

Kat Holley- General Manager Triple Threat Elite & Top Threat Tournaments

What advice would you give to girls and women who want to be impactful in the girl's/women's lacrosse community?
Develop your own leadership style. Find a way to inspire, support and motivate others.

Reach Your Goals In 2023 With Top Threat Tournaments (1200 × 600 px) (1200 × 1200 px) (1200 × 400 px)

Setting Realistic and Measurable Goals Before The Girls Lacrosse Season

January is a time for goal-setting and planning for the year ahead. Whether you are looking to make your high school varsity girls lacrosse team for the first time or looking to add speed to your shot or your sprint, it is important that you make your goals realistic and measurable. Anything is possible as long as you follow a few general guidelines for achieving success.

The first step is to define your goals. Have you ever heard of a SMART goal? This is a way to clearly state what it is that you’d like to achieve. Make it Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Putting your goals in writing makes them more tangible and easier to track. Make sure to keep your written goals in a place where you can see them daily to remind you of your goal. Share your goals with friends, family, or a mentor. They can provide support, encouragement, and accountability.

Top Threat Tournaments is here for you! Write out your On-Field and Off-Field SMART goals using our story templates and share them with us at @topthreattournaments, your club, and your friends on Instagram to hold yourself accountable.

Before you set your goal in stone, it is important to evaluate how realistic it is. You want to make sure you are challenging yourself, but not setting your sights too high. Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither are All-Americans!

Now let's break your goal down into smaller, more manageable steps. This will make it easier to focus on one task at a time and measure progress. Work backward from your achievement goal date and lay out what steps you should be taking each month in order to make it a reality, including smaller goals and milestones along the way. If your goal is to be fluid with both hands before tryouts, you should lay out a wall ball routine and practice plan that will get you there.

Make sure to track your progress, evaluating and celebrating along the way. There may be setbacks or you may realize you need to make adjustments as you progress, and that is ok! Remember to celebrate your successes. Recognize your hard work and effort and use it as motivation to reach the next goal.

By following these steps, you will be able to set realistic and measurable goals for yourself that will help you achieve success. Remember, setting and achieving goals takes time and effort, but with persistence and dedication, you can reach your desired outcome.

Lacrosse Injury Recovery: What Parents Need to Know

Parents, especially those of athletes, have the extremely tough job of looking out for the best interest of their child on and off the playing field. At a moment’s notice, a parent can go from their child’s best friend to their worst enemy. As if this job isn’t hard enough, dealing with the emotions of an injured athlete can make navigating this job even more difficult and that is why it is important that parents remember to stay calm, listen and be supportive.

Stay Calm

Sustaining an injury and realizing the length of time needed for recovery in order to return to a sport is a very stressful time for an athlete. If we then include the daily stressors placed on the athlete such as schoolwork and maintenance of social relationships and eliminate the physical activity which they may use to release stress, we may find that this athlete is completely overwhelmed. As a healthcare professional, I sometimes see parents who place additional stress on an athlete by not believing the extent of their child’s injury or by pushing their child to return to the playing field quicker than advised by their doctor, physical therapist, or certified athletic trainer. Parents need to remember that their child is not playing in a professional league and that missing one practice, game or tournament is not going to ruin their career. Most importantly parents must remember that their child is going to look to lean on them for support during this difficult time, so it is imperative that they remain positive, calm and their biggest fan throughout the recovery process.

Be Supportive

Athletes go through a range of emotions including shock, anger, fear, frustration, and isolation following sustaining an injury. During this difficult time, athletes often feel that their coach has stopped caring about them, that their teammates have no time to spend with them, that friends are no longer around and that their social life consists only of rehabilitation. Although this may not be the intentions of their coach, friends, and teammates these feelings, and fears are real for the athlete and the parent must be able to recognize these emotions and continually reassure the athlete that they are on the road to recovery and every day that passes is one day closer to getting back on the field.

Be a Great Listener

Does it seem like your child is always getting hurt or that your athlete can’t seem to recover from a past injury? If so, it is time to dig deeper to try and find the root cause. What we mean by this is sometimes the injury is deeper than surface level and recovery times are being hindered by the

athlete’s emotions and we must be able to detect this. Athletes, especially in today’s world, are being pushed by coaches, parents, and friends to be faster and stronger and sometimes this means playing the same sport 365 days a year for multiple hours each day. Keeping up with this pace can only last so long before the athlete experiences burnout, staleness, overuse injuries and ultimately a decreased likeness of the sport in which they are involved. These signs of symptoms of overtraining can be detrimental to an athlete’s career and therefore parents should monitor and look to prevent this from happening by allowing the athlete to take a season off or encouraging them to play a different sport altogether just for fun during one season.

Parents of athletes must remember that sports, in this case, lacrosse, are supposed to be FUN! Lacrosse should be utilized as a way for their child to release negative stress and energy and also as a way for them to build new social circles. Creating negative energy around injuries, or sports, in general, will only deter your child from wanting to participate and can lead to more frequent injuries with lengthened recovery times.

Unlock Your College Lacrosse Opportunities: A Guide to Girls Lacrosse Recruiting!

At a glance, it may not seem like there’s much to lacrosse recruiting other than playing for the right elite girls lacrosse club and finding the right collegiate program that is right for you, but if you’re looking for ways to stand out from the pack, you’ve come to the right place. Every athlete has their own unique experience during each club lacrosse season. We have laid out tips and tricks utilizing in-person options and online recruiting platforms to maximize your collegiate exposure on and off the field. Read on to learn more about your opportunities as a college lacrosse recruiting prospect!

What to look for when researching lacrosse colleges:

When researching potential colleges, it is important to consider the school's academic reputation, the quality of the lacrosse program, the coaching staff, the facilities, the team's competitive history, and the cost of attendance. Additionally, it is important to research the school's location, the student body, and the surrounding community. Remember at the end of the day you are a STUDENT-athlete and being a student comes first. If you don’t see yourself at the college not playing lacrosse, then it is not the right fit for you. It is also important to be realistic about your skills and academic abilities when narrowing down your list. It is ok to have reach schools, but a majority of your list should contain schools where you are most likely to succeed on and off the field.

Benefits of using IWLCA Recruits/Connectlax, NCSA, and other lacrosse recruiting websites:

  1. College coaches can easily find and evaluate potential recruits in one location.
  2. Streamlined communication with college coaches directly on the platform where they can access your recruiting information, highlight videos, and what tournaments and showcases you will be attending.
  3. Access to resources such as videos, articles, and other information that can help potential recruits make informed decisions about their college lacrosse career.

Tips for creating an effective lacrosse recruiting profile and effective highlight video:

  1. Make sure your profile is up-to-date and includes all relevant information about your lacrosse experience, such as your position, team, and stats.
  2. Include a highlight video that showcases your skills and abilities.
  3. Make sure to include contact information so coaches can reach out to you.
  4. Make sure to include any awards or honors you have received, and upload your transcript and standardized test scores if you are pursuing strong academic schools.
  5. Reach out to college coaches and let them know about your profile, highlight video, and what tournaments and showcases you will be attending.
  6. Ask for feedback from club coaches and use it to improve your profile and highlight videos.
  7. Stay active on social media and use it to promote your profile and highlight videos.

Understanding NCAA lacrosse recruiting rules, regulations, and recruiting calendar:

The NCAA has specific rules and regulations for women's lacrosse recruiting. The NCAA recruiting calendar is divided into three periods: the quiet period, the contact period, and the dead period. During the quiet period, coaches are not allowed to have any in-person contact with recruits or their parents. During the contact period, coaches are allowed to have in-person contact with recruits and their parents, as well as make phone calls and send emails. However, Division I college coaches can only begin reaching out to athletes on September 1st of their junior year. These rules do not apply to Division III college coaches.

Early recruiting tips and tricks:

  1. Start the recruiting process early.
  2. Reach out to college coaches and introduce yourself.
  3. Attend college lacrosse camps and individual girls lacrosse showcases of your top choice schools.
  4. Create a highlight video of your best plays.
  5. Make sure your grades are up to par.
  6. Network with other players and coaches.
  7. Stay active on social media.
  8. Follow the college lacrosse programs you’re interested in.
  9. Make sure your contact information is up to date.
  10. Keep your highlight video updated with your most recent tournaments and showcases.

Why it is important to attend lacrosse showcases:

Attending lacrosse showcases and camps provides middle and high school players with an extremely competitive experience, coached by college coaches, and the chance to step up and show their skills in a small-group multifaceted setting. Not only do you get to learn valuable skills from knowledgeable college coaches, but you also get to showcase your abilities in different ways from the full-field only tournament-style events. Additionally, they provide an opportunity for players to network and make connections with players and coaches from across the country. Players can get a sense of the coaching style and personality of the college coaches on staff at their top schools as well.

How to make the most of your recruiting process:

  1. Start early: Begin your recruiting process as early as possible to give yourself the best chance of success. Start by freshman year if you are pursuing the D1 level.
  2. Research: Research the schools you are interested in and make sure they are a good fit for you.
  3. Network: Reach out to coaches and players to get an inside look at the program.
  4. Showcase: Attend lacrosse showcases and tournaments to get noticed by coaches.
  5. Be proactive: Reach out to coaches and let them know you are interested in their program.
  6. Be organized: Keep track of your recruiting process and stay organized.
  7. Be patient: The recruiting process can take time, so be patient and stay focused.

Let’s review! You now have the knowledge you need to build your potential college list, create a killer online lacrosse profile and highlight video, get in contact with college coaches, and maximize your elite recruiting session by attending girls lacrosse showcases and camps. Have you checked off the first three items on your lists, but don’t know where to start for the best girls lacrosse recruiting showcases in your area?
